When I get my hands on giant prawns like these, I like to airfry, grill or steam them for the best flavour! Today I decided to have some airfried prawns topped with lovely cheese for a quick and simple lunch. The best part? They’re ready in 7 minutes! (ok about 10-12 minutes if you count the cleaning but that’s not too bad at all!) The prawns don’t need any seasoning because we’re stuffing them with garlic, mayo and cheese. This prawns recipe would work really well with halved crayfish too. Be careful not to overcook these so they remain sweet and tender. Ready for a quick seafood fix? Here you go! For many who ask, I’m using Philips XXL Airfryer. Read my review here and don’t miss my other airfryer recipes. Airfried Cheese Grilled Garlic Prawns (budgetpantry.com) Makes 1-2 servings What you need: 4 pieces large tiger prawns 2 tablespoons minced garlic Squeeze of mayonnaise or mentaiko mayo Shredded cheddar cheese Spring onions and lettuce, to serve (optional) Steps: Preheat your airfryer or oven to 180C. In the mean time, prep your prawns by cutting a slit along the back and remove the dirty stuff. Pat dry and stuff with minced garlic, squeeze some mayonnaise and stop with shredded cheese. Fold baking paper into a boat (I would have used my baking pan if the prawns could fit), lay out your prawns, sprinkle more cheese on top and airfry for 7-8 minutes at 180C until done. If using the oven, you may need to add two more minutes to the timing. Tip #1: If you oven has the ‘Crispy Grill’ function, cook the prawns for 8 mins and switch to ‘crispy grill’ for another 1-2 minutes and watch the cheese sizzle. Tip #2: If you have mentaiko mayo, use it! Enjoy your yummy oven-baked or airfried prawns!

“I hate crispy stuff!”, SAID NO ONE EVER! In case you can’t tell by now, I love deep-fried-anything! Fried chicken wings, pork cutlet, greasy fries, tempura, chicken katsu, spring rolls, curry puffs, corn dogs, onion rings, oreos and mars bars! Ok, I would never eat deep fried oreos nor mars bars but I can imagine how delicious they must be. That is how much I love my deep fried food. Back to the deep fried oreos and mars bars. (Sorry, I can’t resist going back to the topic.) I was watching a tv show on the State Fair of Texas and got really, really excited because the fair was ALL ABOUT DEEP FRIED FOOD. I know I couldn’t bring myself to eat 90% of what they sold there (Deep Fried Butter Balls, anyone?), but still, I started hyperventilating a little bit. For the 2013 fair, someone even came up with “Fried Thanksgiving Dinner” (yes, not just the turkey!), which won “Most Creative” in their Big Tex Choice Awards. Some notable mentions previous years were “Deep Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich”, “Fried Cookie Dough”, “Fried Club Salad”….. WOW….. I was absolutely blown away. Ok so now follow me back to reality. Today I’m going to show you how to make AIR FRIED Crab Cakes with NO OIL ADDED. Yes I know, FML. But still, these are still super delicious without ALLLL that oil. After all, nobody ever really needs to sample “Deep Fried Heart Attack”, don’t you think? Makes 15 crab cakes What I used: 500g crab meat, defrosted (I used Okeanoss frozen crab meat from NTUC- $3.50 for a pack of 250g) 6 pieces Julie’s butter crackers, crushed (or use 15 Ritz crackers) 1 egg 1 yellow onion, chopped 3 stalks spring onions, chopped 1 tablespoon mayonnaise 1 tablespoon corn flour Half teaspoon garlic powder Half teaspoon salt Black pepper 1. Dunk the crab meat in a pot of boiling water for a few seconds and quickly drain. Pat dry with kitchen paper. 2. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and shape into desired size. 3. Airfry in preheated Airfryer at 180 degrees for 10 minutes. Alternatively, heat up some oil in a skillet and shallow fry each side til golden brown. How much I spent: $7 for crab meat (2 x $3.50) $0.30 for egg $0.20 for onion $0.50 for crackers Everything else from my pantry! Total cost per serving: $1.60 (for about 3 crab cakes) —————————————————————— The method to prepare these is quite similar to my Airfried Zucchini Patties. Only the ingredients (and thus texture) are different. The sweetness of the crabmeat pairs so delightfully with the butter crackers I can’t even. For variation, you can also coat the crab cakes with some panko to make them even crispier. And that is how I get my fried food fix. DO.NOT.EAT.THOSE.DEEP.FRIED.BUTTER.BALLS.!

Welcome to another cheat dish, perfect for those days that you just can’t be bothered are too tired to cook. Remember this recipe where I used Yeo’s Sambal Udang for “BBQ Stingray” style sutchi fish? I did the same with these fat, crunchy prawns. And have you ever wondered how restaurants get the bouncy texture in their prawns? I marinated these prawns in cold water and sugar for 30 minutes before cooking, and they turned out firm with a fantastic bite. Rasa Malaysia has another more scientific method to achieving bouncy, crunchy prawns, so hop over and take a look! I am sure her method works better than mine, with the pH and all. It simply sounds more intelligent than my sugar and cold water method! Makes 4 servings What I used: 400 grams peeled prawns (I got mine frozen from Sheng Siong. The prawns are graded by size and come in a large packet) 1 can Yeo’s sambal udang sauce 1 red onion, sliced Some parsley Cold water and 2 teaspoons sugar, for marinate 1 teaspoon olive oil 2 chilli padi, cut (optional) 1. Marinate the prawns in cold water and sugar for 30 minutes. 2. In a wok or large pan, heat up the olive oil and fry half portion of the sliced onions til translucent (medium heat). 3. Turn up to high heat. Add the prawns and fry til just turning pink. Add the sambal sauce and chilli (if using), and fry til prawns are done. 4. Top with remaining sliced onions and parsley. How much I spent: $1.45 for Yeo’s Sambal Udang $6 for prawns $0.30 for onions Everything else from my pantry! Total cost per serving: $1.94 ——————————————————————- Yeo’s Sambal Udang can be bought from Sheng Siong and is great with seafood dishes. Time for me to stock up on a few cans for lazy-to-cook days!
