BBQ time! We’ve been wanting to get an indoor grill for the longest time but the few models we’ve come across at friends’ homes produce too much smoke (and splattering grease) for our liking. After trying the Philips Avance Indoor Grill, I’m glad we waited! The grill is really easy to set up with just three parts: the grill itself, the grease tray and the die-cast aluminium grid non-stick grid. It’s also incredibly easy to use. With just a turn of the knob, the grill heated up in a minute and we could start grilling our food. There’s even a keep-warm function for us to keep our food warm when we’re done grilling – or when we’re taking a break from all the eating! Here are some of the unique functions of the indoor grill: Advanced infrared heat technology for up to 80% less smoke The advanced Infrared technology and the special reflectors guide the heat towards the grid achieving delicious, evenly grilled food, while leaving the grease tray cool enough to minimise unpleasant smoke and grease splattering. As fat and water content differ per food type, grilling some ingredients (beef and chicken) results in hardly any smoke, while with others (pork or lamb) there can be slightly more- yet much less as compared to current grills. Non-stick ALU grid provides authentic BBQ grill marks Grill marks! Jason is crazy about them. Haha Lean grilling- excess fat is collected on XL grease tray Food is not cooked into its own grease and the fat is separated into the grease tray allowing for lean grilling. Easy to clean detachable parts are also dishwasher-proof Grills and BBQs are hard to clean. However thanks to the non-stick grid the appliance takes less than a minute to be cleaned. Additionally the detachable parts are dishwasher safe. See my tips on cleaning the inner sides/surface below. Easy set-up start grilling within 1 min Simple to use, easy to install. The Philips Smoke-less Indoor grill consists of two parts: a grid and grease tray, which will take less than a minute to assemble. With minimal parts to set up, you will spend less time on assembly and more time on enjoying all the goodness of grilled food. This grill is cbb-approved! She loves the grilled mushrooms, asparagus and pineapples and kept asking for more! And here are some extra tips on caring for your Philips Indoor Grill: Residual grease on the die-cast grid or surface areas of the grill can cause extra smoke when you next use it, so ensure that you clean it properly after each use. Both the non-stick grid and drip-tray are dishwasher safe and removable for easy cleaning. Simply wash or wipe excess oil after each use so that the smoke-less grill is ready for your next BBQ session! Consider lining the bottom and inner sides of the grill (the non-detachable grill stand itself) before grilling. The grease can be a tad hard to clean off. When the grill is cool to touch, remove the aluminium foil and clean the base and all surface areas within reach using a damp cloth or sponge. Ensure that all parts are dry before storing away.

I’m alive! It’s been a really busy two weeks. I started my new job 8 September, and the initial two days were ok, when I could still breathe and smell the flowers. Now my ever chirpy team mate has to remind me every two seconds, “Chris.. breathe.” and even so, all I catch is the whiff of my 4th espresso for the day. I’m not complaining though. I get to do what I like– write– although I’m in a totally new arena now. It is challenging– I was working late into the night most days last week and lots of stuff baffle me, but I learn new things everyday and my team rocks. I don’t know.. we just get along quite amazingly. I have no fear about not getting any help when I need it. I am supremely thankful. And happy. I am nursing a nasty cold now. It started off as runny nose last night but I am now dying. I don’t know how I am going to crawl through the week to the weekend. I am looking forward to Friday because I am meeting my ex-colleagues. And Saturday because I am meeting my ex-ex colleagues. I just hope I remain alive as I transform these technical jargon which nobody wants to read. Oh, and another plus of this job is that I get to bring lunch. My office is located in an ulu place. The cafeteria is closed. You can either choose to take the shuttle out for lunch, which was what I did for one day, but it is really too much hassle. We bring lunch boxes daily, and I like preparing my lunch boxes. Today I made a tuna mayo with onions and corn, and a mixed salad drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Yesterday’s lunch was teriyaki salmon with potato patties and roasted tomatoes, and tomorrow I will be having chicken breast with bell peppers, grilled veggies, tomatoes and a little bit of fried rice. I don’t think you wanna see my lunch boxes, but then again, maybe you do. “LIKE” my Facebook page if you haven’t. I usually post random stuff there. And follow “budgetpantry” on instagram if you’re curious about me. This was my pathetic looking salmon and beans lunch the other day which was up on Facebook. I didn’t even bother to watermark it because of the way it looked. Yes, I judge my lunch. You can have the pic if you want. Today I’m going to share a bbq beer ribs recipe. How do I cook ribs? I marinate them overnight with olive oil, Hoisin sauce, HP sauce, garlic, sugar and some black pepper. Sometimes I use bbq sauce, it is really up to you. The trick? Low temperature, long cooking time. I like that it is so easy– after marinating, fill tray with beer, and bake, covered, for an hour, turn ribs over, bake again for another hour before you remove the foil for the last 15 minutes. It is easy but time consuming. All you need is time. Baked BBQ Beer Ribs Serves: 4 Total cost per serving: $3.41 What I used: 10-12 pieces pork prime ribs 1 tablespoon olive oil 6 tablespoons Hoisin Sauce 3 tablespoon HP Sauce 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 tablespoon sugar Black pepper Beer Steps: 1. Marinate the ribs with olive oil, hoisin sauce, hp sauce, garlic, sugar and black pepper overnight. 2. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees celsius. Lay ribs in single layer (retain leftover marinade), bone side up and fill tray with beer til about halfway through the thickness of the ribs. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 1 hour. 3. Turn the ribs over and bake, covered for another 1 hour. 4. Remove foil, brush the top of the ribs with leftover marinade and bake uncovered for the last 15 minutes. How much I spent: $11 for prime ribs $2.65 for Tiger beer (I buy in carton) Everything else from my pantry

Baked BBQ Beer Ribs
Serves: 4
Total cost per serving: $3.41

What I used:

10-12 pieces pork prime ribs
1 tablespoon olive oil
6 tablespoons Hoisin Sauce
3 tablespoon HP Sauce
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon sugar
Black pepper
Beer

Steps:

How much I spent:

$11 for prime ribs
$2.65 for Tiger beer (I buy in carton)
Everything else from my pantry

Chicken wings are a favourite in my household, but I’ve not cooked them in quite a long time because of health concerns. I usually buy chicken fillet or breast as they are lower in fat. So when I decided to give my family a chicken-wing treat last week, I knew exactly what I was going to do with it: Make GINGER WINGS! This marinade is great for BBQ-ing, baking or roasting too, so if you don’t have a Philips Airfryer, don’t fret! But being the Airfryer advocate, no other cooking method beats the convenience of cooking these in one. Just 15 minutes and no extra or splattering oil.. frying chicken wings doesn’t get easier than this. Airfried Ginger Wings Serves: 4 (2 wings per person) Total cost: $3.60 Total cost per serving: $0.90 What I used: 8 whole chicken wings (you can also use mid-joint only but they are double the price) For the marinade: 3 tablespoons minced ginger, along with the ginger juice (put it in your food processor) 2 tablespoons oyster sauce 2 tablespoons light soy sauce 1 teaspoon fish sauce 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon honey (just use an extra tablespoon of sugar if you don’t have honey) 1 tablespoon chinese cooking wine (hua diao jiu) 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon corn flour Steps: 1. Marinate wings for at least 4 hours or overnight. 2. Line aluminium foil in the airfryer basket (don’t cover the entire surface area to allow air to circulate), spray quickly with cooking spray. 3. In a preheated airfryer, lay the wings front side down and spray some cooking spray. Airfry at 180 degrees for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, turn over and increase temperature to 200 degrees and airfry for 5 minutes. If using mid joint only, use 160 degrees and 180 degrees respectively. 4. Serve with lemon and a “chicken rice” style chilli dip! *If using oven, preheat and bake at 200 degrees for 25 – 30 minutes depending on your oven. Turn once halfway and bast with marinade. How much I spent: $3.60 for wings Everything else from my pantry These remind me of the grilled bbq wings we have in local hawker centers, only better! Using the airfryer means that the meat remains juicy while the skin turn out super crispy. I can’t imagine cooking crispy wings any other way. These ginger wings were finger-licking good and were cleaned out in minutes!
