Yes, this was our second Club Med adventure this year! The kids could never resist Club Med, so we decided to surprise them with a 3D2N family getaway to Club Med Bintan this school holiday. Our journey began at Tanah Merah ferry terminal, and we reached Bintan’s Bandar Bentan Telani ferry terminal in just 50 minutes. The best part is that Club Med Bintan offers a complimentary shuttle service, so we didn’t have to worry about transport at all! It was truly a holiday where NO planning was needed— all we had to do what we wanted, whenever we wanted! For the husband, this meant lounging all day e’er’ day at the resort’s various bars. With complimentary drinks, snacks and live music, I can’t say I blame him! Deluxe Room with Sea View and Balcony We stayed in the Deluxe rooms with Sea View and Balcony, and our rooms were just a few steps away from the main building. We would have loved the interconnecting rooms but we booked a little too late this time. Our rooms (for two adults and two kids 5 and 8) were two rooms apart along the same stretch, so that was fine! There’s a ‘mini’ corner bed that comes with corner rooms, and Cbb quickly declared it as hers before Cdd had the same idea. The Deluxe room is furnished with a balcony and I loved the beautiful sea view that greeted us every morning. The restaurants and bars Club Med Bintan got us covered with two restaurants we can go to for all-day dining in different settings. The Waterfall, Club Med Bintan’s buffet restaurant, offers a variety of heavy and light meals in different cuisine styles, including Korean, Indian, Italian, American, French and of course, local Indonesian cuisine! My favourite dishes were the Chef Specialties, which included gourmet plates such as Beef Wellington, Seafood Bouillabaisse, Salmon Poke Bowl, Cheese Ravioli, Beef Bourguignon, Mexican Tacos and SO MUCH MORE on top of the extensive buffet selections! Go to my Instagram highlights to see the amazing variety we tried. I guarantee you will be wowed too! Since it was already 2+ when we checked in, we went to Terrace Restaurant for a late lunch, available from 2 to 5pm. The menu was extensive and there’s a kids menu too. We enjoyed the Seabass with Warm Quinoa Salad, Crispy Fried Squid served with Aioli, Ayam Bakar and a Tempeh Wrap. The Caramel Panna Cotta was to die for – you need to try it if it’s available! There are many bars in the resort for you to lounge around and try out all the specially concocted beverages, cocktails and alcohol! I love the Panorama Bar (above pics) for the amazing Indonesian coffee (Barista classes are available too – just ask for the timings!) and the husband spent maybe 50% of his time at the Main Bar trying out the all-inclusive alcohol menu (you can also top up for premium spirits). The Beach Bar is great to lounge around while the kids build sandcastles just few steps away. Club Med Kids Club Own up – this is the real reason why you’re considering a Club Med holiday! I mean, we love our kids, but it’s nice to be away from them once in a while. Club Med’s Kids Club is a fantastic service designed to give both parents and children a fun and stress-free vacation experience. The club offers a variety of age-appropriate activities, ensuring that kids are engaged, entertained and well-cared for while parents enjoy some time to relax. Petit Club (2-3 yo) and Mini Club (4-10 yo) are available at Club Med Bintan, and the kid’s version of Club Med is just as amazing as the grown-up one. On offer: spaces, meals and activities designed especially for children of these ages, and all supervised by Club Med G.Os. Petit Club is available at an additional charge (check with the resort) while Mini Club is included in your stay. On the first day, Cdd needed some time to warm up, so we spent time playing board games, table football and building blocks at the Mini Club. The classrooms could use a refresh, but that didn’t stop him from having fun! There are two pools at the club, with swimming typically scheduled after lunch, but kids can swim with parental supervision at other times. Activities like the Flying Trapeze, Archery, Wall Climbing, and Treasure Hunts keep kids entertained throughout the day. They also rehearse for performances, a great way to encourage self-expression. At lunch, you can either join your kids at the Waterfall Restaurant or let the Mini Club handle their meals. Overall, Club Med’s Kids Club is perfect for families who want a vacation that caters to both adults and children, ensuring everyone has a memorable time! What I like is that the drop off and pick up timings are flexible, so if you want to take the kids to the beach for example, you’re welcome to do so! A special shout-out I wanna give a huge shout-out to G.O. Re Re, who really went out of her way to make Cdd feel comfortable. He was a bit shy and clingy at first (to mummy!), but Re Re picked up on it right away and put in so much effort to connect with him. She even asked if she could join us for dinner when I said hi to her at the restaurant! By the end of the meal, Cdd was back to his usual chatty self and couldn’t stop laughing. Needless to say, neither of the kids wanted to say goodbye when our holiday ended. It truly takes a special person to be a Mini Club G.O., and we can’t thank Re Re enough! Club Med x The Ranger Buddies For the first time ever, Ranger Buddies Missions land on the shores of Club Med Bintan. Designed with children and families in mind, the Ranger Buddies Missions make learning about sustainability a fun and engaging part of their holiday experience whilst encouraging participants to care for the planet. Read more about The Ranger Buddies: Start a Wave of Change in my blog post here: Club Med Bintan x Ranger Buddies: It’s MISSION time! The beach and other activities Club Med offers a private 2.5km beach with pristine sand along the South China sea, the ultimate retreat for families! The kids have been looking forward to the beach since day 1 and we finally found time (too many activities to do, really!) to go on our last day! Since our ferry was at 6.30pm, we still had time to use the facilities and stay in the club after checking out, until the 5pm shuttle pick up. Due to the monsoon season when we were there, water sports like kayaking, etc were suspended, but you can still have a game of volleyball, take a stroll or chill by the Beach Bar. The husband went for Archery lessons and there were also yoga, tennis, golf, ping pong, aqua fit, sundance, barista classes, body fit, futsal tournaments and more activities at Club Med Bintan. Whether you want to try something new like trapeze, unwind at the spa (I did! the rates are reasonable!), or simply enjoy the beautiful beaches and waters, Club Med Bintan offers an incredible variety of activities that will keep you active, engaged and entertained throughout your stay. Plan your Club Med Bintan holiday Friends who know me know that I was never a resorts kind of girl. But after experiencing the Club Med hospitality TWICE in a year, I guess it’s safe to say that we will choose Club Med again and again! Major plus point about Club Med Bintan is it’s only 50 minutes away by ferry, so it cuts costs (ferry tickets were about S$300+ for 2A2C) vs travelling by plane. And the nearer the earlier to enjoy all the amazing facilities! The kids absolutely love our Club Med holidays – I think they’re on a quest to experience all the different Club Meds around the world! It’s not too late to book your holiday. Plan your family getaway at Club Med Bintan today!

A special shout-out

I wanna give a huge shout-out to G.O.

Club Med x The Ranger Buddies

For the first time ever, Ranger Buddies Missions land on the shores of Club Med Bintan. Designed with children and families in mind, the Ranger Buddies Missions make learning about sustainability a fun and engaging part of their holiday experience whilst encouraging participants to care for the planet.

The beach and other activities

Club Med offers a private 2.5km beach with pristine sand along the South China sea, the ultimate retreat for families!

Plan your Club Med Bintan holiday

Friends who know me know that I was never a resorts kind of girl.

Our first mission: Turtle Egg Rescue

Here we are joining in the first mission, helping Coco the Tortoise save the threatened habitats of her ocean cousins through the Turtle Egg Rescue. By listening to clues given by the Club Med GO, the kiddos found all three eggs within minutes and were very proud of their achievement! As a family, we also learnt how to create origami trees in the second mission and through AR, we watched our forest come to life!

Ranger Buddies Missions at the Mini Club

Next up at Mini Club Med+, the kids joined in the ‘Sort it Right’ activity, where they learnt how their actions can create mighty waves of change – and just by sorting their trash right, they can better protect marine animals in the sea.

If you’ve been following Budgetpantry’s Facebook page, you would know that my family travelled to Yunnan, China for the June school holidays. Check out my itinerary posts on Facebook. Might get around to blogging but let’s see. Since posting our Yunnan adventures, many of you have asked me how to pay in China, i.e., how I paid for stuff, and if cash is still accepted. From my experience, yes! But smaller merchants may not have change to return you. In this post, I will share the exchange rates and different payment methods I used in China: 1. Alipay (linked my Trust and YouTrip cards) 2. WeChat Pay (linked my Trust and YouTrip cards) 3. Changi Pay (topped up using PayNow) 4. Cash Alipay Alipay is our favourite platform! The interface is easy to figure out and I linked both my Trust debit card and YouTrip card to the Alipay app. How to pay: either you scan the merchant’s QR code displayed at the cashier (“我扫你”) or get the merchant to scan your QR code (“你扫我”). Cons: Some smaller stalls esp in local markets only accept WeChat Pay, so I suggest you set up both before travelling. WeChat Pay WeChat Pay is the most widely accepted payment method in China. It works the same as Alipay but there were a few times where the app timed out and I had to restart it before I could make payment. I linked both my Trust debit card and YouTrip to WeChat. How to pay: same as Alipay, either scan the merchant’s QR code or present yours. Changi Pay Being super kiasu, I also signed up for Changi Pay, a digital wallet that doesn’t require you to download WeChat or Alipay, nor link credit or debit cards. You will be verified with Singpass and you can top up $ into the digital wallet via PayNow. How to pay: Changi Pay is accepted at merchants who accept Alipay in China, so launch the app and scan the merchant’s Alipay QR or present yours. In countries like Hong Kong, it’s only accepted at merchants who accept Alipay+. Cons: the exchange rate is lower than WeChat and Alipay, but could be an ok trade off for folks who don’t wanna download WeChat, Alipay or link cards. Another plus point of Changi Pay is that you CAN transfer to someone else’s Alipay wallet (only if user has a China-based account), which I have personally tried and works. However, there are transaction limits which you can find out on this page: Changi Pay FAQ. Cash (Renminbi) I exchanged about RMB 500 at SG’s money changer before leaving. And I will still recommend having some cash with you. There were 1-2 instances where my data died / reception was wonky and I just couldn’t launch any apps, and the cash came in handy. Exchange rate: Exchange rate varies depending on the transaction posting date. For debit/credit cards, I only used Trust and YouTrip to pay China because 0% FX fees! In my same-day example here, the exchange rate of the Trust card was 5.350, YouTrip was 5.357 and Changi Pay 5.284. On other days, Trust card had a better exchange rate and I would say both Trust and YouTrip not much difference overall and are pretty much equal. And to be honest, even Changi Pay’s exchange rate difference is also negligible. Some choose Changi Pay for transactions above 200 rmb as there’s no 3% fees, but you can also ask merchants to split your WeChat/Alipay payments to avoid the fee. Up to individual! Other tips There are other ways to pay in China but these were what I used. Note that you cannot use WeChat or Alipay to make payment IN Singapore. So can’t test out before you travel. For YouTrip, you can link either your physical card number or virtual card number to WeChat/Alipay, it doesn’t matter. There’s a wallet feature in WeChat Pay and Alipay. With a non-mainland China issued credit/debit card, you cannot top up funds to your wallet and transfer to friends/tour guides. You can only pay merchants directly. If you have money in your WeChat Pay or Alipay wallet e.g., from an earlier transaction when your Chinese friends have transferred money to you, then you will be able to transfer wallet-to-wallet. Changi Pay allows wallet transfer to a recipient in China, but with limitations (see above). To pay a larger amount of money to China drivers/tour guides, I used DBS Remit, which allows same-day overseas funds transfer either to a China bank, or to anyone’s Alipay account (you just need their full name and China phone number linked to their Alipay!) The exchange rate has been super good. $1 SGD was around $5.30 RMB during my travels (May/June 2024). Now for the perks… Trust card: Get an in-app scratch card when you sign up with referral code: D1ZTJ2N1. Unveil guaranteed cashback of min. S$5 up to S$1K! Download the Trust bank app and use my referral code D1ZTJ2N1 when prompted and get an in-app scratch card with guaranteed cashback of S$5 up to S$1K! You can use Trust card to withdraw money at ATMs globally at 0% foreign transaction fees too. Read about my experience withdrawing cash in Taiwan. Get S$5 with YouTrip Tap on my YouTrip referral link to sign up, and get S$5 with your first top up. You can also withdraw money at global ATMs! I hope this guide gives you a better idea of how to pay in China. Check out all my travel posts, such as what we did in Yilan, Taiwan, with kids!

Day 8: Taipei Children’s Amusement Park 台北市立兒童新樂園 > Bus to Danshui > Back to hotel It’s time for Taipei Children’s Amusement Park, the most value-for-money activity for kids everrrr. We were supposed to go on Day 7, but because the kids COULDN’T leave Roader’s Plus Hotel, we moved our visit to the next day. We took the cab from our hotel around Taipei Main Station (it was around NT$250 ~ SG$11) as there was no direct MRT train. We could have taken bus 756 from Taipei Main Station but we had to wait quite a while cos the bus intervals in Taipei are quite long and the journey would take around 50 minutes. The amusement park is near Shilin so can also take train to Shilin and change bus. This time, I’m prepared! Spray on alllll the repellent before stepping into the park – it worked – I only had 3-4 bites on my arms! This brand in the pic is quite good, and easy to apply, recommended by the pharmacist in Taiwan. Thank you to the bestie for getting it for me and delivering to my place before I flew! I also quite like this one from Tiger Balm – easy to spray, plant-based, natural and no deet. My eczema baby didn’t get any allergies with this. Mosquito patches don’t really work for the xiao hei wen in Taiwan. We got tickets from Klook (like we literally booked from Klook while we were standing outside the park haha) and it was NT$176, save SG$1 per pax = SG$4 per family 也是錢 ok! We love booking activities and transfers with Klook and we use the platform all the time, not just in Taiwan. If you’re new to Klook, sign up with my link to get a US$5 promo code as soon as sign up is completed. If you’re not new to Klook, input my code “budgetpantry” and get 5% off your cart (minimum spend US$50, discount capped at US$10, code valid till 31 December 2023). It was so easy to redeem the tickets. Just look out for the redemption booths to the left of the entrance, scan the QR codes and receive the tickets in the form of a dated wristband that you wear throughout the visit. Cdd was in wonderland! This amusement park is pretty small-kid friendly as there are many rides they can go on and there are various indoor activities to entertain them too. At 3.5 years old in June, Cdd was above 98cm and he was able to go on quite a few rides like the Ocean Carousel, Ferris Wheel, Orbiterra Starship, Crazy Bus, Telecombat, Wave Swinger, Spinning Teacups, Spinning Chairs and the Transformers (the height requirement for all of these rides is 90cm). For information on height restrictions, go to this page by Taipei Amusement Park – it’s really informative! If you child hasn’t quite met the height requirements, there are many other things for them to do – there’s a playground, a sandpit, indoor rides and more. The Klook ticket gives you unlimited rides on 13 rides during the date of visit. The facilities include: Ocean Carousel, Poli Ferris Wheel, Monorail (Single Rail Train), Crazy Bus (Flying Bus), Wave Swinger (Radial Flying Chairs), Telecombat (Spinning Aircraft), Spinning Tea Cups, Spinning Chairs (Swiveling Chairs), Swing Ship (Pirate Ship), Magic Star Trek (Roller Coaster), Dancing Fly, Bumper Cars, and Drop Tower (Free Fall). Whether you buy from Klook or over the counter, there are some premium rides/plays that you need to pay extra for (around NT$80, can be paid with Easycard), like the Transformers one that we paid but it’s totally not fun at all haha. We didn’t spend that much time at the park because it started raining and many outdoor rides were starting to be suspended. We didn’t want to go indoors because if go inside then totally no need to go Danshui. So off we went to Danshui to spend our last night in Taiwan. We took bus 757 from the amusement park (cross the road from the main entrance, turn right and walk straight. Use google maps!) to Danshui and reached there at around 5pm. The kids had a mister donut and milk tea break at the train station and off we went to explore Danshui Old Street 淡水老街。 I’ve always loved Danshui cos It’s a mish mash of old and new. Touristy shops on one side and 老店s on the other. Old streets on the right and scenic waters on the left. It’s a place where you see artists with their paintbrushes and street performers with their guitars. Where you taste street food like fried squid 炸花枝 (with 熟悉的朋友—五月天— blasting in the stereo) and traditional food like 阿給 A-gei (glass noodles and minced meat encased in a fried tofu puff, sealed with fish paste and served with a tasty light gravy) all in one place. Danshui is so vibrant and touristy but not that touristy till there’s no identity, you know what I mean? 😄 Someone was REALLY happy with her cotton candy! Makes me smile just seeing her joy. There’re so many types of street food along the old street. Here’s what we tried: Looking at the 炸蛋蔥油餅 (fried egg in onion pancake/prata lol), I’m missing Hualien! And very soon it was sunset. We took a walk towards Starbucks and we (especially Cdd!) were captivated by 街頭藝人郭育豪 and his guitar (look for him on IG: haohao__co), and when he asked if anyone wanna 點歌, I asked if he could sing 那女孩對我說 cos my daughter loves this song. And she enjoyed his rendition while practising gymnastics next to him. 一邊聽那女孩對我說一邊練習 gymnastics. Lol I dunno what combination that is but it is a good combination. Our 3 hours at Danshui was only scratching the surface. In the short amount of time, we didn’t even cover the entire Old Street and there are SO MUCH more to explore. If you’ve never been to Danshui before, you need a full day here. We were also running a bit low on cash, and with tomorrow being our last day, I decided to withdraw NT$1000 from the First Bank ATM. As usual, zero withdrawal fees and zero foreign transaction fees when you use Trust card linked to your bank account. With even better exchange rate than any money changer you can find. Download the Trust bank app and use my referral code D1ZTJ2N1 when prompted and get an in-app scratch card with guaranteed cashback of S$5 up to S$1K! And since it was getting late and there’s a flight to catch the next day (at 5.45pm, so it’s not over yet!), we started making our way back to Taipei Main Station. But not before we walked past a pair of elderly performers playing Chinese oldies, and Cdd exclaimed, “Mummy, it’s quite a nice day!” And not before we impromptu-ly bought two kites and sent them soaring in Danshui’s night sky. We left Danshui with promises of visiting Fisherman’s Wharf, Lover’s Bridge and Fort San Domingo the next time. And we’ll look forward to the next time. What a glorious way to spend our last night in Taiwan. Day 9: Kura Sushi > Taipei Main Station > Taoyuan International Airport > Home Sweet Home It’s our last day in Taiwan! We checked out at 11am, stored our luggage at reception and went straight for Kura Sushi 5 minutes away from our hotel just across Taipei Main Station. We had Kura Sushi when we were in Osaka and loved their affordable and unique variety. Surprisingly, the kids liked the cold udon the most! Cbb went for her usual aburi mentai salmon and Cdd liked the bonito ramen. And there are a few ways you can play games while eating, like self-slotting/returning every 5 plates gives you a chance to spin for a random prize, very smart leh, the kids kept asking for more plates to slot! In the end they very happy when win an eraser like what?! After lunch we went to Taipei Main Station Breeze to buy 裕珍馨 milk cakes (we only buy this yummy and affordable brand as recommended by our Taiwanese friend but as fate would have it, Breeze was under renovation! We ended up buying some other brand.. don’t forget to get your tax refund from level 2 of the station, see my pic for the inconspicuous tax refund counter, located near an escalator. NT$2000 can get tax refund already. Our driver and friend Hawk picked us up and it was time to go back to SG. He drives a Toyota Sienta that can sit five including himself, and he can arrange for car seat too. Send me a message on Facebook or Instagram (budgetpantry) if you need his contact. And in case you’re curious about the kid’s and adult’s meals on Singapore Airlines: It’s been an amazing holiday, can’t wait for the next one. So happy that we covered Yilan and Miaoli that we haven’t been to before. And thank you for being with us throughout our Taiwan adventures, I hope you found my updates useful to your trip planning! ————————————— Don’t miss my other posts on our Taiwan 2023 vacation: What we did in Taipei with kids: Day 2 – Indoor Playground, Ximending, King Food Hotpot, Carrefour | Read the post What we did in Taipei with kids: Day 1 – Greenworld Ecological Farm, Roader’s Plus Hotel, Shilin Night Market | Read the post 皇家帝國麻辣火鍋吃到飽 Taipei King Food Spicy Hot Pot review | Read the post What we did in Taichung and Miaoli with kids: 3D2N itinerary | Read the post What we did in Yilan with kids: 4D3N itinerary | Read the post Red Lantern Yilan 紅樓: Sensational Roasted Duck Nigiri! | Read the post How to withdraw money from Taiwan ATMs at no foreign transaction fees | Read the post Roaders Plus Hotel Taipei review: a playground for the kids! | Read the post

Day 8: Taipei Children’s Amusement Park 台北市立兒童新樂園 > Bus to Danshui > Back to hotel

It’s time for Taipei Children’s Amusement Park, the most value-for-money activity for kids everrrr.

Day 9: Kura Sushi > Taipei Main Station > Taoyuan International Airport > Home Sweet Home

On day 7 of our Taiwan holiday (also our second day in Taipei), we initially planned to go to Taipei Children’s Amusement Park in the morning but the kids kept on asking to play at the hotel. I don’t blame them one bit – Roaders Plus Hotel Taipei is indeed a wonderland for the little ones! Day 7: Sleep in > Indoor playground adventure at the hotel > Ximending > King Food Spicy Hotpot 皇家帝國麻辣火鍋吃到飽 > Carrefour > Back to hotel to soak bathtub, nua and watch tv! So they spent the morning at the indoor playground and the hub and I ordered breakfast from the food truck and chilled while waiting for them. And before we knew it, it was already 1pm! Luckily I planned for tomorrow to be a relaxed day before going to Danshui so I just switched the itinerary around. Amusement park tomorrow! Chillin’ with free snacks: We went shopping at Ximending until our 4pm slot at 皇家帝國麻辣火鍋吃到飽 King Food Spicy Hot Pot. See my review post for all the details! Ohhh if you’re planning to go, please bring cash. They don’t accept card and I eat halfway have to look for ATM to withdraw cash! The ATM at hi-life charged a 4% mark up fee (it’s charged by the local bank, not Trust bank), but the ATM will confirm with you if you’re ok with the fee before proceeding. So instead of the ~22.65 exchange rate, the rate for that withdrawal was around 21.5。 差不了多少又不是按幾百萬对吗，anyway I had no choice if not my hub got to wash dishes. Hahaha. In case you’re new to Taiwan and are wondering, Xi Men Ding is not a night market so many shops are also open during the day, although it’s definitely bustling at night! Got some cute trinkets for the kids. Cdd was busy dressing up at the photo store. You’ll find a few of these in ximending – you choose your get up and take photos in one of the photo booths. Then we went for our 4pm buffet hotpot! You need a reservation at this restaurant, which is also really popular with locals. See this post to know more. We ended the night shopping at Carrefour and got some of our favourite Taiwanese products and a box of ripe, juicy mangoes. You really need to get Taiwanese fruits. The large golden kiwi is less than SG$1 each (like $0.9x) and so sooooo sweet! In SG 我是有點買不下的 wahaha, Some of our favourite Taiwanese items. The sesame sauce and taro chips are must-buys! Couldn’t resist stopping at 王記府城肉粽 Wang Ji Fu Cheng to dabao for their tasty meat dumplings. We were stuffed from the hot pot, so this table of food is a pic from a previous trip. Wa kueh, meat dumpling, meat ball and radish soup! Went back to the main ximending area for uh, Ji Kuang Fried Chicken. Then it was back to our hotel to play bath bomb, watch youtube and relax (for me and the kids) while the husband did the laundry. He was so amazed at the app that lets him monitor how long it takes for the laundry to be done – in real-time! Read my review on Roaders Plus Hotel Taipei: a playground for the kids! ————————————— Don’t miss my other posts on our Taiwan 2023 vacation: What we did in Taipei with kids: Day 3 & 4 – Taipei Children’s Amusement Park, Danshui, Kura Sushi | Read the post What we did in Taipei with kids: Day 1 – Greenworld Ecological Farm, Roader’s Plus Hotel, Shilin Night Market | Read the post 皇家帝國麻辣火鍋吃到飽 Taipei King Food Spicy Hot Pot review | Read the post What we did in Taichung and Miaoli with kids: 3D2N itinerary | Read the post What we did in Yilan with kids: 4D3N itinerary | Read the post Red Lantern Yilan 紅樓: Sensational Roasted Duck Nigiri! | Read the post Roaders Plus Hotel Taipei review: a playground for the kids! | Read the post How to withdraw money from Taiwan ATMs at no foreign transaction fees | Read the post Download the Trust bank app and use my referral code D1ZTJ2N1 when prompted and get an in-app scratch card with guaranteed cashback of S$5 up to S$1K!

Chillin’ with free snacks:

We went shopping at Ximending until our 4pm slot at 皇家帝國麻辣火鍋吃到飽 King Food Spicy Hot Pot.

In SG 我是有點買不下的 wahaha,

Some of our favourite Taiwanese items.
